The new Les Bois Hall (French for “The Woods”) opened in August 2021, representing the first new residence hall in nearly 100 years since Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Located adjacent to Le Fer, an existing student housing building on the southern part of campus and student housing facilities, this site presented an excellent opportunity for a new ‘Housing Node.’ Its location is accessible by most parts of campus, creating an anchor and public face on the southern entry to the campus. The new Student Residence Hall is an exciting and welcome new architectural addition to an already beautiful campus. As such, it breathes new life into the surrounding community by creating flagship student spaces and modernized amenities such as the dining area and a bookstore.
This project featured 92 total student beds in an apartment-style configuration. The hybrid three/one-story building, which acts as the heart of a new residential node, was designed to be quickly manufactured in a series of repetitive units [rooms, bays, wings]. This repetition of elements resulted in cost reduction and quicker construction, allowing the project to be delivered by fall semester 2021. The final product provides an enhanced, multi-functional student experience with amenities commensurate with the expectations of today’s students.
